Jose Mourinho had reached an agreement with Anfield giants Liverpool before changing his mind to become Chelsea manager, his former advisor Jorge Baidek claims.

Mourinho was just 15 days away from taking over from legendary manager Gerard Houllier during the 2003-04 campaign at Anfield.

The Portuguese manager was also on course to guiding FC Porto to a Champions League win and was favourite to become manager at the Merseyside club.

But Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich persuaded Mourinho with his future plans at Stamford Bridge and the Special One led them to their first Premier League titled afterward.

n a new book, ‘Mourinho: Beyond the Special One, from the origin to the glory’, his former advisor, Baidek confirmed there was an agreement with Liverpool.

According to the book, Mourinho and his team were asked to wait for 15 days before a proper agreement can be reached, but Chelsea took the advantage. Baidek recalled:

“Mourinho should have gone to Liverpool.

“Rick Parry [then chief executive] was in charge of transfers and we had an agreement.

“They asked us to wait for 15 days as Houllier was still the Reds’ manager.”

Bruno Satin, the French agent, had been involved in negotiations but Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes alerted Chelsea to act fast.

And Mourinho along with Mendes met Abramovich for the first time before Porto’s Champions League semi-final match against Deportivo La Caruna.

After Porto emerged victorious in the Champions League final following victory over Monaco, Mourinho signed a deal in Abramovich’s private yacht.

Rafa Benitez who won the Spanish La Liga with Valencia then joined Liverpool and helped them win the Champions League in 2006.

But Mourinho won consecutive league titles at Stamford Bridge but was beaten in the semi finals by Benitez’s side who became eventual champions in 2006.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Jose Mourinho was a strong candidate for Liverpool job but the Merseyside preferred Rafa Benitez in 2004, Jamie Carragher claims.

After Gerrard Houllier left Anfield by mutual consent the Reds were in search of a world-class coach.

Mourinho had just won the Champions League with FC Porto after winning the Europa League league with the same team the previous season.

The Portuguese boss became a household name in European football after knocking out the likes of Man United en route to winning the cup.
